My beautiful girl is six months old today. There is no way I will actually be able to encapsulate in words how wonderful-amazing-fantastic this kid is, but here's my best attempt:
My baby girl almost always has a smile on her face. After those first two months when she was almost always crying, almost always in pain, and I was in agony right along with her because I could do nothing to fix it, it was hard to imagine we'd ever see her smile. Now it amazes me every day how much she SMILES! And when I hold her, her body is calm and her eyes are happy, and she smiles up at me with those eyes that crinkle just like her dad's. Oh, I wish there were a way to capture that feeling and pull it out whenever I needed it.
Back in the sick days, just about the only thing that could make her feel better was to be held. All the time. Including when she slept at night. And it exhausted me, but how long is she going to be little like that and WANT me and NEED me? Not very long, I told myself. She still likes to be held, and her favorite sleeping position is still on my chest, but she now sleeps on horizontal planes that are not me. However, sometimes I keep her there even though I know she could be put down, especially on the nights I work. Sometimes I hold her while she sleeps and then all of a sudden I look at the clock and it is the middle of the night and I should be sleeping so I can take care of her in the morning, but I just DON'T CARE because holding that little sleeping bundle is so wonderful.
And her laugh. Her laugh! She laughs and squeals and giggles, and even has a belly laugh! She has all different laughs for all different occasions, and the other day she even laughed so hard she snorted! She loves to sit on either my lap or her dad's lap and just stare at the other person, laughing and smiling, and then look at the person holding her, laughing and smiling, back and forth, back and forth. She could do it for hours.
She just loves being around us, and while she can be put down now (Did you read that?? My child who had the NEVERPUTMEDOWN disease is now happy to roll around on the floor or sit in a bouncer. It's true!) she often will bellow if I leave the room, and all I have to do is pop my head around the corner and look at her, and she rewards me with her huge smile, as if to say, "Thanks! I just needed you to look at me!"
Now that she enjoys places other than my arms, she is loving this whole new world of "things." She LOVES her crinkle book; and her elephant teether with the peanuts in the belly; and GiGi the giraffe, the first toy she ever picked out herself. She loves being laid on a blanket so she can roll and roll and roll. She loves looking at herself in the mirror; it makes her laugh like crazy. She loves her bouncy activity center; she jumps and screams and laughs until she chokes while she stares at the frog and laughs at the flowers. She has learned that many of her toys have buttons, and when you push them, MUSIC HAPPENS, and SHE MADE IT HAPPEN! She loves all music, and if she finds the right tune, she will dance with speed the Lord of the Dance would envy. Watching her marvel at all these new experiences is amazing. Just watching her look at her hand with wonder makes me feel like the world makes sense.
She loves her dad. Oh, she loves that guy so much. They have fun rituals, like the one where he leans over and she grabs two huge fistfuls of his hair and YANKS and doesn't let go and laughs and laughs and laughs at how funny she is. Or the one where he flies her around like a plane while I cook, and she laughs as they zoom past, over and over. She already looks at him like he is the only guy in the planet, and I love how we both feel that way about him.
She has discovered the joys of being upside down. This kid would be upside down for hours if I didn't stop her. She loves laying on her back across my legs with her head hanging down and her eyes fixed on something across the room. If I try to sit her back up, she will sometimes fight so hard I think I will never get her to sit upright again and I will have to walk around with a baby in the shape of a "C" whose nose I am perpetually looking down.
She adores her cat and her dog. When she sees their faces, she laughs so hard she squeals. Cleo is still her nanny, and she will stay with her no matter what we are doing in another room. If I am shaking a bag of treats in one room and the baby is sleeping in the other, Cleo stays with the baby. MoJo recently started coming and sitting on my lap when Josephine cries, and then he slowly rubs up against her and starts purring. Josephine will immediately laugh and pet him, forgetting her tears, and MoJo will just sit and let her hit him in the face (she needs some work on refining "face pets").
We are seeing the beginnings of a little dramababy. She will FLAIL her head back and give a fake sob and throw her hand over her face, but if you react the way she wants you to, she is smiling a millisecond later. Seriously, is it possible for a kid this young to have a fake cry? She definitely has one. We are already seeing those moments where I just imagine she is saying, "But I just have all of these FEELINGS! It's all just so overwhelming!" I know it will not be funny later in life, but it sure is adorable and funny right now.
She is growing too fast. Some of the 9-month clothes we got out a few weeks ago are already too small, and she fits into most 12-month clothes. She sat unassisted for FIFTEEN SECONDS on Monday! She is all about her sippy cup; she doesn't get much water out yet, but she loves trying. She seems moments away from running. She is just so strong and sturdy and ready to go go go.
She is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can't believe it has already been a half a year. I know it's so cliche to say, but it feels like yesterday that we brought her home, put her car seat in the middle of the living room floor, and looked at each other as if to say, "What now?" If the first half year of her life went by this quickly ... I can only imagine how quickly the rest of her childhood will slip by. I waited so long for her, and now I have to pinch myself every day to see if it is real. But she's real. She's here. And I love her more than I ever could have imagined.
I love you baby girl.

Is it Really Today Already?
Six months ago today at 2:33 PM, we welcomed Josephine Isabelle into this world.
And no, DAD, I am not going to LIE and tell the Internet that she was born at 2:34, even though you thought it would be "super cool" for her to be born at 2:34 on 8/9/10. I didn't lie on her birth certificate and I won't now! Seriously, he was so adamant about it that the doctor was like, "Yeah, I can totally do that if you want." Umm, no. Don't encourage him. (Although, there was another baby in the nursery who was born at 11:12. 8/9/10 11:12. Freaky.)
Okay, that was my build-up. I don't have the strength the write her real six-month post yet, so wait for that later in the day.
My baby! She's GROWING! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

In Which I Lose Any Followers Who Might Be Pageant Parents
While watching Toddlers and Tiaras and folding laundry right before bed, Jeremy is sitting next to me, entertaining Josie. As far as I know, he is ignoring Toddlers and Tiaras, as usual, since he hates it with every ounce of his being. What follows is a (paraphrased version of a) discussion that transpired:
Jeremy: Wait, wait, wait. Wait WAIT WAIT.
Veronica: Um, YES?
Jeremy: Did she just say that the entry fee for that pageant was $1,800??
Jeremy: Wait, wait, wait. Wait WAIT WAIT.
Veronica: Um, YES?
Jeremy: Did she just say that the entry fee for that pageant was $1,800??
Veronica: Yeah.
Jeremy: PER kid?
Veronica: Yeah, pretty crazy, right?
Jeremy: No, what's crazy is that WE are suckers with stupid jobs that destroy our souls when we could be raking it in with pageants! We could totally do this! Oh my god ... just think of all the money we would make!!
Veronica: Yeah, and we wouldn't really have to invest that much.
Jeremy: How much would we have to spend? The cash prizes are always really low, like $500, right?
Veronica: I thought you didn't watch this show.
Jeremy: I DON'T
Veronica: Right. Well, one cash prize and a few cheap-o crowns and sashes. A thousand bucks?
Jeremy: Oh my god! No wonder there are pageants! They're a gold mine! We are SOOO doing this.
Veronica: Yeah, and I could be the pageant director.
Jeremy: Seriously. If we had 50 girls and charged them $1,500 each ...
Veronica: Yeah, and I could be the pageant director.
Jeremy: Seriously. If we had 50 girls and charged them $1,500 each ...
Veronica: I think my name should be Shandy.
Jeremy: ... then that's $75,000!
Veronica: Should I go blonde as Shandy?
Jeremy: Veronica! $75,00 for working ONE day of our lives!
Veronica: No, I think Shandy is proving that brunettes do it better. Yeah. I like that. What would your name be?
Jeremy: My name? Why would I need a name?
Veronica: I don't think an emcee at a beauty pageant would have a name like Jeremy. Sorry. That's just the world we live in.
Jeremy: I would NEVER be an emcee at a child beauty pageant! I'm not a PEDOPHILE!!
Veronica: Dude, I'm fully aware you're not a pedophile. But I thought you were invested in this money-making scheme.
Jeremy: Yeah, I'm the BRAINS behind the operation.
Veronica: I'm thinking "Victor."
Jeremy: Veronica. Stop it. Listen to my side of the conversation. I'm not going to be AT the pageant. Just scheming ways to make more money at it.
Veronica: Okay, Victor. But I think you should dye your hair black and get a pencil mustache.
Jeremy: Veronica. Focus.
Veronica: You know, on one of those episodes, a director left before it was over and just took off with all the money and never gave out prizes. I bet she made out pretty well.
Jeremy: Holy shit. You can DO that?
Veronica: Well, I don't think it's legal. Or moral ...
Jeremy: [interrupting] Just imagine if we had 150 girls and charged them $1,800 a piece! That would be ... $270,000!!!
Veronica: Wow. I had no idea how great you were at mental math.
Jeremy: I can do a lot of things when I'm trying to secure our financial future.
Veronica: But if they got there and didn't see a table of crowns and shit, they might get a little suspicious.
Jeremy: Okay, okay. So we invest in some props and then repeat this scam in a few cities. BOOM. Totally worth it.
Veronica: But I think we can also make more if we make it look a little more realistic. What if we had some of our siblings step in as the make-up artists and hairstylists and force all the contestants to use them? Oooh, and we could have one of them be a "consultant" who charges for a pre-pageant session? Okay, Shandy is really getting into this now.
Jeremy: Think, Shandy! You wanna share our cash with other people?? GUH! You want us to be poor forever, don't you?
Veronica: Well, then I guess YOU'LL have to be the consultant. Hmmm. What would your name be?
Jeremy: Okay, forget the whole thing.
Veronica: Sebastian!
Jeremy: I'm going to bed.
Veronica: Perry?

Bizarre News
One of my favorite activities is reading strange news stories, and usually I just read them to Jeremy and get really excited when he reacts the same way I did or get really mad when he doesn't think the story is as strange or hilarious as I did. So, instead I am going to tell YOU and just hope you react the way I did. If not, I'll be mad at you. React wisely.
The first story is quite a doozy. I've been holding on to this little gem for a long time. So, there's this judge. And one day he starts handing out acorns to women on the street. But there was something inside those acorns. Ummm ...

Then there was the guy who single-handedly implanted "Pants on the Ground" into my head, where it has been stuck for DAYS. Do you hate seeing teens with their pants sagging? A 45-year-old in Memphis REALLY does. When he spotted a 17-year-old with his pants on the ground, he shouted at him to pull his pants up. When his request was ignored, he did what anyone would do: shot him in the back.
Do you owe your father-in-law money? That is quite a gamble you're taking there, mister. If you refuse to pay him back, he might kidnap you and when you don't have money for ransom, he will demand your XBOX 360 as payment. Note to self: Tell in-laws I do not, in fact have a laptop and instead write this blog at the public library.
In perhaps my favorite story in recent history, a 13-year-old boy was arrested for possession of a SHARPIE. Apparently graffiti was a big enough problem that Oklahoma City passed a law making possession of spray paint or Sharpies an arrestable offense. So, when this kid's teacher saw that he DARED to use a Sharpie in her math class, she called the cops and had him arrested. She stated she was mad because he didn't seem to care about the possibility that his marker could bleed through onto the desk. It's a good thing she had him arrested before THAT could happen.
The kicker? One of the pages she "likes" on facebook? Yeah, the official Sharpie Permanent Marker page.
And, last but not least, the "biggest mafia round-up in history." "Why is that bizarre?" you might ask. Great question. Thanks for asking. Here's why: Because there's NO SUCH THING AS THE MAFIA. And you'd do well to remember that. The Cosa Nostra is a MYTH. Capice?

This is not a joke. A man shoved condoms inside acorns and then handed them out to random women. AND he was a judge in INTERCOURSE, Pennsylvania. Wait. Maybe it's BECAUSE he's from Intercourse. Public service announcement?

When his request was ignored, he did what anyone would do: shot him in the back. I mean, I see people wearing things all the time that make me think they deserve to be shot (Not really. I would never ACTUALLY shoot you, lady whose stretch pants are being swallowed up by her ... places ... and is kindly sharing her c-section scar with the world.), but this guy takes fashion very seriously. Maybe when he gets out of prison he can join Stacy and Clinton on What Not to Wear.

Well Played, Wee One
Josephine learned a new trick yesterday while eating breakfast. (By the way -- I accidentally tasted her rice cereal the other day [if "accidentally" means realizing you have some on your hand as you're about to get clean laundry out of the dryer and just lick it off so you don't get it on your clean clothes, then yes, it was a total accident] and OMG! It tastes TERRIBLE! I can't believe I am feeding my child that crap! After tasting it, I offered it to the dog, and she refused to eat it. That dog eats POOP and she won't eat rice cereal. POOP. Man, I will be glad when I can feed that poor baby some yummy vegetables. Okay, tangent over). She learned that if you take a nice big-girl bite of cereal and wait for your mom to praise you for a good bite, then make a raspberry noise -- ALL of the cereal will go spattering all over your mom. And the dog. And the floor. And, somehow, the ceiling.
Now, that might have been the last time she did it. You know, tried it out, then experiment over. Here's where I made my fatal mistake. After she had successfully spit all remnants of cereal from her mouth, she was SO dang proud of herself that she made THIS face:
And she was SO STINKING ADORABLE that ... I laughed.
DEAR GOD. So guess what she did? Yup, she repeated the spit-take ELEVEN TIMES. And died laughing every time. I tried to look like she wasn't cute, but I think she saw it in my eyes. She knew she had made a funny and was so super-cute that she can do just about anything she wants. I smell trouble in our future.
When I stepped out of the room to put her bowl in the sink, I heard her talking to the dog (who always stands by my side while I feed Josephine, even when she is getting food spit on her). I swear, by her giggles, laughs, and then howls, I could imagine what she was saying:
"Dude, Cleo, did you see that? I totally got mom! Like TWELVE times! She was like, 'Oh, sweetie, here is a bite of cereal! I bet you will swallow it like a big girl!' and then I was like, 'Oh, sure mom, just put it in my mouth!' but then I DIDN'T swallow it at all! I spit it all out instead! Bwahahahahahahaha!! I am a comic GENIUS!!!!!!"
The best part? I told Jeremy all about it and then suggested HE feed her dinner. Guess who she didn't spit on? Yup. She was saving it all for mom this morning. The girl is too smart for words. And, she kinda IS a comic genius.
